Yup. It was time. I've been avoiding it too long. I only brought about a week and a half's worth of clothing with me at it was at the end. Time to do laundry.
Really, because the machines here are so expensive (£2 for a wash and £0.20 per 20 minutes of drying apparently), I had decided to wash my clothes in the sink and hang dry them. Good solution, no?
Well… I guess that depends on how you look at it. The sink is pretty small. Three loads in the sink wasn't too bad, it was just that whenever I tried to rinse out the soapy water and dirt from the freshly scrubbed load, the water just kept getting dirty! Soap, rinse, rinse, rinse, rinse…. There was simply a point at which I was forced to give up for fear of wasting water and time!
My clothes are theoretically clean now, but after much wringing and squishing, they are still quite wet. Hanging them will dry them, but slowly, so I'm trying to keep the window open (though its cold) to make them dry a little faster. We'll see how that goes. Next time I'm washing daily piece by piece. Cut down on the amount!
Besides my exciting laundry adventure, today was mostly about studying. We got our tests from last week back, which was good. I'm in the top 5 scores (out of maybe 28 to 30), but I wasn't exactly satisfied because my professor couldn't give me good reasons for some of the points she took away. I didn't want to badger her too much, because she has been giving me good advice about grad school and research etc and I'd like to remain on her good side.
Speaking of which, when I asked her about whether getting a Masters in Neuroscience before getting a PhD in some subject related to neuroepigenetics (what I'm calling my new favorite future field) would be useful, Dr Kimbrell said I should just go straight for the PhD. Apparently whatever I learn from mentors in the lab or in classes during my grad degree should be enough. Shrug. I can always take more classes if I feel I want to learn more. :) I'm really excited about this field. I really want to help pioneer it.
Yeah, unfortunately getting a Masters is not really a stepping stone to PhD. Just keep bugging them about grad school and they will help open the right doors for you.
ReplyDeleteOn laundry, In the bath or Shower is allot faster. In the shower just take a shower, then toss the dirty stuff on the shower floor, stomp and detergent, then rinse. On drying, do they provide towels? If so, spread your stuff on the towel, roll it like a buritto then twist, twist twist. Most of the water will transfer to the towel. Then drying will happen quicker.
Ok, is Neuroepigenetics an actual field, or did you make that up.
ReplyDeleteWell, I talked to Dr. Kimbrell about that too. I made up the word, but its what she reckons the field will be called, as Neurogenetics is sort of a thing. Mostly, because the field of Neuroepigenetics is so new, it doesn't really have a name, so I'm naming it. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for the laundry advice dad!
